How To Help My Dogs Allergies

Hello Fall: Surviving Allergy Season With Your Dog.

Allergy season is among us in the Carolinas. This season can be rough on a human's immune system, let alone our furry companions. Below are some natural ways to help your dogs' immune system help fight off their allergies.

Allergies in dogs can show it's head with a variety of symptoms. For canines, it could look like sneezing or reverse sneezing, itching a lot more than usual, or licking their paws and feet constantly.

Here are a few tricks of the trade that I've learned over the years as a dog mom and as a professional dog trainer. I always look at the whole dog when it comes to training. If the dog has allergies and is constantly licking is going to affect the dog's entire body and behavior.

Nutrition - Whole foods and a species-appropriate diet are crucial for any dog with allergies, especially if your dog suffers from food allergies. Certain foods and fillers can inflame the immune system making them more susceptible to food and environmental allergies. Make sure your dog is on a healthy and balanced diet. A balanced diet looks like fewer fillers and additives, more protein, veggies, and fruits. Choosing alternate proteins like salmon or fish can help their skin and coat.

(We ended up switching Zena to Tuckers Salmon Raw Diet, and it's been the most beneficial thing for her food and environmental allergies.)

Colloidal Silver - can be diffused in any diffusers during the fall and winter to help with sneezing and congestion. Diffusing Colloidal Silver will also help strengthen the immune system for seasonal allergies or help relieve kennel cough symptoms in your pup.

(This has been a game-changer for my 5lb Chihuahua reverse sneezing, here is the link to purchase through Amazon.)

Mushroom Powder- is a natural antihistamine and needs to build up in your dog's system. This powder is best to start before allergy season in the fall or spring. If you can't time it perfectly or don't get a chance to begin beforehand, that's still okay. It will help build up your dog's immunity not to be constantly scratching or licking.

(Holistic Hound Mushroom Powder is our Favorite and has helped us get Zena, our pitty and husky mix, allergies under control.)

Full disclosure I am not a Veterinarian or Veterinarian nutritionist/behaviorist. This blog is my viewpoint and knowledge over the last eight years in the pet industry as a vet assistant, dog trainer, and dog mom to 3 wonderful fur babies. I endeavor to help pet parents be more educated about what is best for the health and behavior of their dogs.
